Reflecting a diverse range of subjects, styles, and strategies, the artists on view are propelled by the question “who, and what, gets to be the subject of an artwork?”
Depictions of their communities, family, and friends suggest that, for these artists, portraiture remains a profound social practice.
To this end, the exhibited artists, from emergent to established voices, broaden the spectrum of stories portrayed in contemporary art and explore the stories portraits tell.
