Florence is celebrating its 40th anniversary on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list with two different walks on April 18. One will look at the new perimeter of the area from Oltrarno area from San Niccolò to San Miniato and the other way around: the Heritage Walks will have the same itinerary but told from different viewpoints: one from a more cultural and historical-artistic standpoint and the other more focused on environmental and nature issues.
April 18 is the International Day of Monuments and Sites, officially established in 1983 by UNESCO. “For Easter Monday, we will be celebrating Florence as a UNESCO World Heritage site on the day dedicated to sites,” said Florence mayor Dario Nardella, with four free walks in the new green ring path that has recently become part of the Florentine site as World Heritage and 40 years after its inclusion on the UNESCO list. It will serve as a chance for Florence residents and visitors to broaden their horizons beyond cultural and environmental itineraries, also highlighting greenways only a few steps away from the historic center of the city, he noted.
The cultural itinerary will begin at 10 AM and 3 PM from Torre San Niccolò and continue along le Rampe designed by Giuseppe Poggi, through the Iris Gardens and towards the Church of San Salvatore al Monte, the Parco della Rimembranza and the abbey of San Miniato al Monte to then descend from the hill through the Rose Garden and end up at the Porta San Miniato. The environmental itinerary will instead go the opposite way.
