League leader Matteo Salvini on Tuesday denied he was planning a visit to Russia over the conflict in Ukraine.
“No visa requested or mission organized”, he said. “The objective is to reach peace at any cost and meeting everyone, as stressed today by the Holy Father”, said Salvini referring to the pope’s interview to Corriere della Sera published on Tuesday, “remains a priority for me” and for 74 percent of Italians polled in a recent survey by the Ipsos institute.
“A renewed agreement between Russia, Ukraine, Europe and the United States must be an objective for all”, said the League leader. In an interview to ‘Non è l’Arena’ program of private network La7 broadcast Monday, Salvini said that he was “ready to go to Moscow tomorrow morning if it were useful to get closer to peace”.
“We are working on it, we are doing something discreetly”, he told the broadcaster. Nationalist leader Salvini has in the past courted controversy with his support of Russian President Vladimir Putin but has been outspoken in his condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
