In the early hours of Sunday morning, a 19-year-old man suspected of car theft fell to his death while attempting to evade New York Police Department officers on an elevated parkway leading to the George Washington Bridge, authorities reported.
The incident began around 1:30 a.m. when officers from the Bronx’s 52nd Precinct, assigned to a public safety team, attempted to stop the man who was driving a stolen vehicle. The exact location of the initial traffic stop has not been disclosed by the NYPD.
The suspect sped away, managing to reach Broadway and West 207th Street in Inwood before the stolen car broke down. Abandoning the vehicle, he continued his escape on foot, sprinting along the Henry Hudson Parkway towards the city-bound upper level of the George Washington Bridge.
During his flight, the man seemingly misjudged a gap in the elevated parkway and fell onto Riverside Drive below. Emergency medical services were called to the scene and transported him to Harlem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing. NYPD officials have not provided additional details regarding the circumstances of the traffic stop or the suspect’s background.
