On Friday December 15, 2017 the United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA) celebrated the winners of the 22nd Annual UNCA Awards for the best print, broadcast and electronic media coverage of the United Nations, U.N. agencies and field operations. The Dinner and Awards this year took place at Cipriani 55 Wall Street in New York. Guest of Honor, UN Secretary-General H.E. António Guterres delivered prizes. UNHCR Special Envoy, Angelina Jolie was awarded as recipient of the 2017 UNCA Global Citizen of the Year.
During the event, the actress – who is a Special Envoy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees – gave a speech about how being a citizen of the world means you have to see “yourself in the struggles of others”. She also underlined the importance of fighting “for human rights and freedom as your fight.” In the end, she explained that today all the people have the “responsibility not to break faith, and to hold together when people want to divide us.”
