Atlas Ocean Voyages has made a bold entry into the luxury cruise market, quickly establishing itself as a significant player in Polar expeditions since launching its first sailings in 2021. Instead of starting with more conventional destinations like the Caribbean or Mediterranean, Atlas chose to dive headfirst into the Antarctic market, offering luxurious yet competitively priced voyages.
The company operates a fleet of three superyachts, designed specifically for luxury expeditions. The first ship, World Navigator, debuted in late 2021 with space for 196 passengers – a significantly smaller capacity than many of its luxury competitors. The line has since added World Traveller in 2022 and World Voyage, which set sail recently.
These ships are not your typical expedition vessels. Certified with Polar Category C and Ice Class 1B, they are built to withstand the extreme environments of the Polar regions while offering the luxury of modern superyachts. Atlas Ocean Voyages keeps its fleet in the Arctic and Antarctic for most of the year, making it the only luxury line to offer nearly year-round Polar expeditions.
This past winter (the antipodean summer), all of Atlas’ ships were in Antarctica, a move that is unmatched in the industry. To make these remote destinations more accessible, Atlas offers fly-in options to Antarctica, allowing travelers to avoid the rough seas of the Drake Passage. By the 2025-2026 season, the number of fly-in itineraries will double, providing even more options for travelers. The company has expanded its itineraries to include cultural immersion sailings in destinations like Iceland, Northern Europe, South America, and the Caribbean.
One of Atlas Ocean Voyages’ most significant differentiators is its focus on culinary excellence. The company has created a unique “Epicurean Expeditions” program, especially during its Mediterranean sailings, where food takes center stage. These voyages bring aboard renowned chefs and culinary experts from prestigious restaurants, magazines, and TV programs.
This culinary focus has been elevated further with a strategic partnership with Academia Barilla, a renowned institution in Italian cuisine. Through this collaboration, Chef Marcello Zaccaria, a top chef for celebrities and diplomats, joins select Atlas sailings. Chef Zaccaria brings his extensive expertise in Italian cooking, with a particular emphasis on pasta, offering guests hands-on experiences and insights into the art of Italian cuisine. From mastering the perfect pasta to pairing it with the right sauces, this partnership adds a distinctly Italian flair to Atlas’ culinary offerings.
Atlas’ fleet of smaller ships is a key advantage, allowing the company to visit destinations that larger cruise lines simply can’t access. This flexibility enables Atlas to offer more unique and immersive itineraries. The company’s yachts can navigate narrow waterways like Greece’s Corinth Canal and Spain’s Guadalquivir River, bringing passengers closer to hidden gems in these regions.

When Atlas Ocean Voyages launched, it set out to compete in the top tier of the luxury market, going head-to-head with established brands like Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons. While there were some early service challenges, the company has been quick to address them and improve its offerings. Today, Atlas is focused on enhancing its technology and expanding its booking systems for travel agents, all while keeping an eye on delivering exceptional experiences to its guests.
With no immediate plans to grow its fleet or go public, Atlas Ocean Voyages remains committed to refining its unique approach to luxury cruising. Whether it’s through its nearly year-round Polar expeditions, its commitment to sustainability, or its exclusive culinary partnerships with world-renowned brands, Atlas is carving out a distinct niche in the luxury cruise market.
