The match, in which Van Daal’s team defeated Greg Berhalter’s team 3-1, came after two ties and a win for team USA in this year’s World Cup edition.
USA started off aggressively with a shot by Pulisicthat was saved, but Memphis Depay scored the first goal of the match, at the 10th minute, and brought team Netherlands in the lead. The second goal was scored by Daley Blind, the midfielder of AFC Ajax, right before half-time.
In the second half Haji Wright scored an unexpected goal for USA 15 minutes before the end of the game, injecting hope and enthusiasm in the US soccer fans around the world. But when Denzel Dumfries scored a third goal for the orange team, there was little hope left for a comeback for team USA.
“This is a difficult one to handle,” said head coach Greg Berhalter at Fox’s microphones right after the match. “We came up short today but not for lack of trying or lack of effort,” he concluded.
Filled with enthusiasm, Netherland goes directly to the quarterfinals and is ready to face the winner of Saturday’s evening match which will be disputed between Argentina and Australia.
