The hair of the unforgettable Kurt Cobain, the historic frontman of Nirvana who died by suicide in 1994, has gone up for auction again. According to an article published by Consequence, the two locks in question, which were allegedly cut by the musician’s friend Tessa Osbourne, had first been sold in 2021, for $14,145.
Now, they will be auctioned off for a second time at Potter & Potter Auctions’ “Punks, Monsters, Smut & Madmen: A Countercultural Cross-Section” event. Several other rare and unique items related to punk and counterculture history will be offered at the same time.
Among the most notable pieces will be punk rock icon GG Allin’s underwear, signed in his own blood, and artifacts from New York’s legendary punk venue CBGB’s, including a piece of the dressing room wall and an awning from the window of its gift shop.
However, most collectors’ eyes will be on Cobain’s blond locks. The Nirvana frontman is universally recognized as one of the greatest rock stars of all time.
This time around only two locks will be available, leading to speculation that the original buyer either kept the remaining parts or is trying to sell them to private buyers. The auction house says the hair in question was originally obtained in 1989 from Cobain’s friend Tessa Osbourne while Nirvana was on tour in Birmingham, England.
Items belonging to the frontman have often fetched high prices over the years. His Martin D-18E acoustic guitar, used at the MTV Unplugged concert in New York, sold for a record $6 million in 2020, making it the “most expensive” guitar ever, while the cardigan Cobain wore during that performance sold for $334,000.
Once again Cobain’s hair is expected to attract considerable interest from collectors, who are ready to spend tens of thousands of dollars to secure a “piece” of the unforgettable Nirvana frontman.
