Yesterday, Sir Elton John moved the audience at London’s Dominion Theatre with a touching revelation. During a gala performance of the new musical The Devil Wears Prada, for which he composed the score, he stated that he still has limited vision in one eye, describing this condition as one of the most challenging of his life.
The artist explained that due to his health condition, he will not be able to attend the numerous planned previews. He also thanked his husband, David Furnish, describing him as his pillar during this difficult time.
This is not the first time the legendary singer-songwriter has spoken about his visual difficulties. Last September, he announced on Instagram that he had been affected by a severe eye condition. Although he had declared he was recovering, he warned that the process would be long and demanding.
Despite his personal challenges, the musician has continued to dedicate himself passionately to music, contributing to the score of the show. The theatrical production, based on the 2006 film of the same name, follows the story of a young journalist navigating the glamorous and relentless world of fashion.
The audience enthusiastically embraced both the melodies and the actors’ performances, confirming the success of the production, which features Vanessa Williams as the fearsome editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly, portrayed in the film by Meryl Streep, a character from Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel.
The event was also a special occasion to raise funds for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which involved prominent figures from the entertainment and fashion world, including designer Donatella Versace and Anna Wintour, the British journalist and editor-in-chief of Vogue America since 1988, who is said to have inspired the character of Priestly.
The gala evening highlighted not only the singer’s timeless talent but also his resilience. After concluding his farewell tour in the UK in 2023, with a performance at Glastonbury in front of 120,000 people, the artist demonstrated that he is still deeply connected to music and theater.
