On Tuesday former First Lady Michelle Obama wowed the audience during the second night of the Democratic Convention in Chicago presenting a captivating speech. Equally fascinating was her outfit, and as often happened during her tenure in the White House, curiosity stormed the web to find out what she was wearing.
Michelle Obama appeared to the jubilant United Arena audience in an outfit by the New York-based brand Monse: a sleeveless navy-blue crisscross jacket, cinched by a belt with metal eyelets, and matching ankle cut pants. As for the accessories, she opted for Jimmy Choo’s Scarlett low-heeled shoes and David Yurman’s jewelry, hoop earrings and maxi rings on milky nails. Side parting hair and high braided ponytail appeared as a mixture of traditional styles told in a modern key, a perfect touch of elegance. A look with a “futuristic flair” as Women’s Wear Daily called it. A decidedly contemporary ensemble that translates into simplicity and vigor, certainly a look that modernizes (and rejuvenates) that formal style too often deemed appropriate in politics.

Tuesday night was not the first time Michelle Obama chose to wear the designs of Monse’s co-founders, South Korean Laura Kim and Spanish Dominican Fernando Garcia, who serve also as the creative directors of Oscar de la Renta, a brand that the former First Lady has picked on many occasions, including the one for Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday.
The brand’s website says the Monse collections are inspired by menswear and classic tailoring with a deconstructed perspective. The description goes on to say that “it is a line for modern women who seek to stand out from the crowd without compromising her effortless demeanor”. That is definitively Michelle Obama’s style.
