After over six decades of dedication, Joseph Sciame, the personification of St. John’s University’s spirit and community engagement, has announced his retirement, leaving behind a legacy filled with acts of generosity and mentorship on the lives of countless students and colleagues. Known affectionately as the face of St. John’s University, Sciame’s journey from a student to vice president reflects the growth and evolution intrinsic to the St. John culture.
Sciame, 82, slowly became a cornerstone of St. John’s University since he first stepped onto campus as a student in 1958. His tenure at the university spanned 61 years, during which he served in various roles, most notably as its first Vice President for Financial Aid. Sciame’s commitment to education and community service was evident in his work, including the discreet management of high-profile students like the daughter of former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, ensuring her privacy and a normal student experience. Reflecting on his career, Sciame shared, “It’s been incredible. St. John’s University allows people to be who they are, thanks to education and a spirit of service.”

Sciame’s influence extended beyond the campus to the larger community, where he has been a pivotal figure in various civic and cultural organizations. His contributions were not limited to his official roles; he co-founded the Bedford Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter School and has been an active member of numerous Italian-American civic groups.
Colleagues and students remember Sciame for his personal touch and the relationships he built. “Joe has been a tireless advocate for students who truly exemplifies the mission of St. John’s,” said André McKenzie, Ed.D., Vice Provost. Sciame’s philosophy, rooted in the belief that potential is only realized when nurtured, has guided his interactions throughout his career. “What I would like to leave people with is that within us we all have talents and goodness. If nurtured properly, the amount of good that can be done is incalculable,” Sciame reflected.
As Sciame steps into retirement, his legacy at St. John’s University and beyond remains indelible. Joseph Sciame leaves behind a university and a community enriched by his dedication, compassion, and leadership, embodying the true spirit of service and educational aspirations.
