The 26-year-old son of Cyndi Lauper, Declyn, was taken into custody following a shooting on Wednesday, according to the New York City Police Department. He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Around 7:15 p.m., police responded to a 911 call and discovered that a male individual, 24, had been shot in the leg. An NYPD spokeswoman stated that Declyn was taken into custody in the “confines” of the 28th Precinct at approximately 7:30 p.m.
The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Morningside-St. Luke’s Hospital and is said to be in “stable condition.”
Cyndi Lauper is known for her colorful and eccentric style, as well as her vocal range and expressive voice. She has won several awards, including a Grammy, an Emmy and a Tony, and has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She is also a champion of human rights, especially for the LGBTQ+ community, and has founded the True Colors United organization to end homelessness among LGBTQ+ youth.
This is not the first time that Declyn has been in trouble with the law. He was previously arrested in 2022, when he was found sitting in the driver’s seat of a stolen vehicle, which was also illegally double-parked, as per the police.
At the time, he was charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle and was ordered to complete five days of community service and stay out of legal trouble for a year.
