New York’s governor, Kathy Hochul, was seen wearing a white sling at an event in upstate Watervliet Elementary School this past Wednesday. She addressed the injury, saying that she tore her pectoral muscle lifting weights in the gym the day before.
Hochul claimed the accident occurred after she pursued a New Year’s resolution to lift 80 pounds, which is 10 pounds up from her usual 70. The tear then worsened and was further inflamed when she went to the doctor’s office, she commented.
“I’m not ready to play with the Buffalo Bills on Sunday- I’m going to have to be on injured reserve,” Hochul joked to reporters at the Watervliet news conference centered around education policy, as she is originally from Buffalo.
“I thought for my New Year’s resolution I could go to 80,” she added, “And my body said no to 80.”
Hochul’s office stated that the injury took place at the Executive Mansion in Albany, which has a relatively large gym.
Governor Hochul has prided herself as a health-conscious 65-year-old, and said that her last injury happened on a ski trail when she broke her ribs.
She assured reporters that this injury is only a minor ailment and expressed pride in her sling, “You don’t think 80 pounds of weight lifting is pretty damn good for someone my age?” she asked while laughing. “I’ll be fine.”
According to her doctors, she will be in the sling for about 6 to 8 weeks before the tear heals.
