Elon Musk’s stint as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) ended with bruises and headlines. And on May 30, The New York Times published a bombshell report detailing the tech billionaire’s alleged drug use, citing multiple anonymous sources.
According to the article, Musk routinely used ecstasy, psychedelic mushrooms, and other unspecified substances during the election campaign. Central to the report was Musk’s use of ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic with hallucinogenic effects. NYT sources claimed Musk had admitted to being addicted to it. Another source alleged he carried a pill box containing Adderall, a prescription stimulant typically used to treat ADHD, along with other substances.
Musk publicly acknowledged in 2023 that he had obtained a prescription for ketamine. Following the May report, he published a clean drug test — two weeks after the article’s release — in an apparent attempt to refute the allegations.
Regardless, the notion that the world’s wealthiest man may have a history of heavy drug use no longer appears to be a well-kept secret. But the real twist, revealed just this week, is the alleged source of the Times’ scoop.
According to journalist Michael Wolff, a longtime biographer of Donald Trump, the tip may have come from the President himself. Speaking on The Daily Beast podcast, Wolff said the revelation came from conversations with White House aides.
“Trump talks to them and then they talk to other people,” Wolff explained. “Whoever he calls, he says the same thing to everyone. So you know exactly what’s on his mind.”
Then came the most striking claim. Citing someone who recently spoke directly with Trump, Wolff said:
“Actually, we were the ones who passed the information to the New York Times… about Elon’s drug use.”
The relationship between Musk and Trump, once portrayed as an unlikely alliance between two outsized egos, now appears to be fraying. Still, with both men known for their unpredictable moves, nothing can be ruled out. If Musk follows through on hints that he may launch a third party to challenge the Republicans, what was once dubbed “the most incredible friendship of the century” may finally be over.
