Billionaire Pavel Durov, founder of the messaging and social media platform Telegram, plans to divide his almost $20 billion fortune among the 100 children he fathered via sperm donations. Durov revealed that his will details this plan, with portions also included for his six children and three different partners.
Durov’s 100 children are scattered across the world, born in 12 different countries over the past 15 years, all conceived through sperm donation. Recently, Durov has found himself in conflict with the Kremlin over issues related to free speech, and last year, he was charged by French authorities for allegedly allowing illegal activities to be conducted over Telegram. The charges included accusations of sex abuse and drug trafficking, which Durov denies.
Despite his widely distributed and abnormally large “family,” Durov emphasized the importance and role of family in his life. In an interview with France’s Le Point magazine, he revealed that his will states his children will not have access to his fortune for 30 years. “His intention is for them to live independently, build their paths, and not rely on inheritance.” Durov claims to treat all of his children equally, regardless of whether they were born “naturally” or via sperm donation. He finished by expressing his hopes that his family will remain united after his death.
Determining one’s will at only 40 years old may seem unusual, but Durov explained its importance due to the nature of his work. Defending freedoms, including freedom of speech, involves risk and creates many enemies, including powerful states, according to Durov. The interview culminated with Durov’s wishes to always protect his children and the integrity of his company.
