Marco Peronaci is the new Italian ambassador to the United States. After weeks of evaluation, the decision to appoint the man who will maintain relations with Donald Trump’s America was made. The choice fell on the current permanent representative to NATO in Brussels.
Born in Pavia, Peronaci is sixty years old and has a long diplomatic career between Rome and Europe behind him, from Brussels to Paris.
He was formerly at Angelino Alfano’s side at the Ministry of the Interior and Foreign Affairs and Italy’s special envoy for Brexit until 2020. He then became the permanent representative to the European Union’s Political and Security Committee before joining NATO in January 2023.
Peronaci will replace Mariangela Zappia, who has been Italy’s ambassador to the United States since 2021. Initially, Massimo Ambrosetti, the ambassador to Beijing, was the main favorite to assume the post.
However, barring any last-minute developments, today’s Council of Ministers will confirm Peronaci’s appointment. Peronaci will be replaced in Brussels by Alessandro Azzoni, the former deputy director general for political affairs at the Farnesina.
