In the last few hours, the Trump Organization website has taken to advertising new merch, the infamous red MAGA cap with a new message: “Trump 2028”.
The caps went on sale for $50. The website also urged prospective voters to “Rewrite the Rules”– a slogan that fueled rumors about Trump’s intention to try to run for a third term, despite the constitutional ban.
T-shirts were also offered for sale on the webpage, at a cost of $36, also bearing the words “Rewrite the Rules.” Eric Trump, senior executive of the organization, posted a photo of himself wearing the hat, along with screenshots of emails from journalists inquiring about the product.
The president and his allies have repeatedly broached the idea of a third Trump term. In a telephone interview with NBC News last month, the president said, “A lot of people want me to do it. But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go. It is far too early to think about it.”
However, at the same time Trump asserted that there are “methods” to circumvent the two-term presidential limit imposed by the 22nd Amendment–a statement that made, and continues to make waves. Afterwards, several GOP figures tried to downplay Trump’s comments, saying he was probably just trying to poke fun at the press.
Yet, a few days after his return to the White House, Tennessee Republican Congressman Andy Ogles filed a constitutional amendment that would place a maximum limit of three presidential terms, as long as the first two are not consecutive, just as in the case of the current U.S. leader.
For this reason, too, the new merch that has appeared on the Trump Organization website has raised more than a few eyebrows, especially among the ranks of the opposition.
