In an interview with NBC News on Sunday, Donald Trump did not rule out the possibility of running for a third term as president. The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, passed in 1951, prohibits him from running again in 2028, but Trump said “there are methods” by which he could remain in the Oval Office nonetheless.
He told the news outlet over the phone that “a lot of people” wanted him to run again, and when asked if he wanted another term, answered: “I like working.” The idea of eliminating term limits has been percolating in right-wing circles for some time. In March of last year, The American Conservative, a blog partnered with Project 2025, published an article arguing for the repeal of the 22nd Amendment titled “Trump 2028.” In January, Tennessee Rep. Andy Ogles proposed a resolution calling for the extension of term limits, allowing Trump to seek another term.
Trump would not say if he had seen any plans for how to run again, but told NBC News that “there are methods which you could do it.” NBC asked if he might run as Vance’s VP, who would then resign once in office. Trump acknowledged that possibility and said that “there are others too.” While Trump assured NBC News that he was “not joking” about the matter, he also hedged, saying that he was “focused on the current,” and had told allies who had brought it up to him that “we have a long long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration.”
Donald Trump mentioned the possibility of seeking another term a week after his inauguration at a rally in Doral, Florida, though many thought that he was joking at the time. “I think I’m not allowed to run again,” the president said musingly to laughs from the crowd. “I’m not sure. Am I allowed to run again, Mike?” he said, gesturing to the Speaker of the House.
