King Charles III was hospitalized briefly on Thursday after suffering side effects from the cancer treatment that he is undergoing. As reported to the media by Buckingham Palace officials, “following planned and ongoing medical treatment for cancer this morning, the king experienced temporary side effects that required a short period of observation in hospital. His Majesty’s afternoon engagements have therefore been postponed. His Majesty has now returned to Clarence House, the private royal residence located in London, and as a precautionary measure, acting on medical advice, tomorrow’s diary program will also be rescheduled.”
“His Majesty would like to send his apologies to all those who may be disturbed or disappointed as a result. The king was diagnosed with a form of cancer in February 2024 and returned to public duties last April, although he was still undergoing weekly treatments,” royal officials stressed.
King Charles III held a series of engagements this week, and despite his illness he received the media and visited an exhibition. The King was scheduled to meet ambassadors in audiences at Buckingham Palace Thursday afternoon, but the engagement was postponed. There was no detailed information about the side effects that caused him to be hospitalized.
His Majesty’s next schedule includes that of an upcoming state visit to Italy, which is scheduled to take place on April 9 in the Chamber of Montecitorio. The ceremony for King Charles’ visit with Queen Consort Camilla before the assembled Houses of Parliament would be the first presence of British royalty there. However, the King’s medical staff stressed caution in this regard: “His Majesty has now returned to Clarence House and, as a precautionary measure, tomorrow’s appointments will also be rescheduled”.
King Charles III is suffering from a type of cancer that has not been specifically revealed to the public. Meanwhile, Buckingham Palace confirmed that treatment will continue through 2025, but provided no further information.
