The exclusion of Tesla from the Vancouver International Auto Show 2025 is not only a logistical decision but also a sign of an increasingly tense political and commercial climate. The organizers justified the decision with the need to ensure the safety of visitors, exhibitors, and staff, but the reality appears much more complex: Elon Musk’s figure is becoming more controversial and subject to heated protests, especially in the United States.
The Vancouver International Auto Show, which this year will take place from March 19 to 23, is one of the most important events in the automotive industry in Canada. Founded in 1928, this annual event, usually held at the Vancouver Convention Centre, provides a platform for major automotive manufacturers worldwide to present their latest models, innovative technologies, and futuristic concepts.
In recent months, the “Tesla Takedown” movement, led by protesters who criticize the South African billionaire for his alleged influence on the Trump administration’s policies and his involvement in divisive decisions, has gained momentum in several North American cities, with pickets in front of the brand’s dealerships and calls for a boycott. The protests, which have now spread to Vancouver, where hundreds of people gathered outside a Tesla store, highlight the opposition to the tycoon and his growing interference.
However, the issue is not only about political activism. The government of British Columbia recently announced the removal of Tesla products from its electric vehicle incentive program, a move that fits into a broader economic tension between the “Maple Leaf Country” and the United States. The province is seeking to prioritize local products, limiting support for American brands when possible.
Musk’s response was swift: on X, the visionary billionaire called the decision “crazy” and further fueled the already heated debate.
Tesla’s removal from the Auto Show comes at a particularly delicate moment for the company. While it continues to dominate the electric vehicle market thanks to its ability to adapt and innovate, the company has struggled to maintain the growth rates that once set it apart. Moreover, its stock has taken a significant hit, recording heavy losses on the stock market. Over the past three months, it has lost about 50% of its value, and year-to-date, it has dropped by 41%.
The show gathers exhibitors of all types of vehicles, including electric cars, hybrids, SUV’s, and luxury vehicles. It also provides a space for interaction between manufacturers, industry experts, and consumers. Moreover, it serves as an opportunity for companies to discuss the challenges and opportunities in the sector, such as the electrification of transportation and sustainable solutions. Tesla will not be welcomed among these.
