On Saturday, Vice President JD Vance was greeted by a few hundred pro-Ukraine protesters upon his arrival at a Vermont ski resort, following his Friday public confrontation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.
Vance and his family, traveling for a four-day trip to the Sugarbush Resort in Waitsfield, were met by outraged protesters lining the snowy streets of the small town of Waitsfield with signs calling him a “national disgrace,” accusing him of being a “traitor,” and encouraging the family to “go ski[ing] in Russia.”
“Have you no shame? Support Ukraine,” another sign read.
Counterprotest groups also made their voices heard: there were even pickup trucks with “Make America Great Again” flags on Main Street in Waitsfield. Another group of counter protesters clashed verbally with Vance’s opponents outside the Sugarbush Resort complex, which includes two mountains. A small group of critics even camped near a chairlift where they thought the Vance family was skiing.
The vice president had planned to stay at a four-star hotel near the ski resort, but canceled his plans and moved to an undisclosed location.
The protests had been planned earlier in the week in the wake of the Trump administration’s cuts to the federal government, but took on new significance after the Oval Office dispute between Zelensky, Trump, and Vance.
