More than 230,000 Canadians have signed a parliamentary petition asking Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to revoke Elon Musk’s citizenship and passport.
The petition is based on the accusation that the South African billionaire, with Canadian and U.S. legal status, is engaging in activities that go against Canada’s interests and has joined a foreign government that is attempting to undermine its sovereignty.
According to the petition’s promoters, including Member of Parliament Charlie Angus, the Tesla founder, who has long been supporting President Donald Trump, is using his political influence to harm the country’s independence.
Furthermore, Musk is also accused of trying to influence Canadian elections through his support for the protectionist policies of the GOP leader, including threats of high tariffs and calls for the annexation of the “Maple Leaf Country” as the 51st state of the USA.
The visionary billionaire responded on social media, mocking the country with the provocative statement “Canada is not a real country,” while his criticisms of Justin Trudeau and his support for the Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre continue to fuel the debate.
However, experts believe it is unlikely that the petition will lead to an actual revocation of the billionaire’s citizenship, given Canada’s strict laws on the matter, which involve a complex process limited to cases of fraud or serious crimes.
Nonetheless, this initiative reflects the growing discontent among citizens, many of whom are boycotting American products and canceling trips to the U.S. in response to Trump’s threats.
The Canadian public is deeply shaken by the actions of the White House, considering the numerous historical and cultural ties between the two neighbors. As political scientist Yasmeen Abu-Laban stated: “It’s like your best friend suddenly turns on you and tries to take away your house and bank account.”
