Senator Bernie Sanders has kicked off his much-anticipated “National Tour to Fight Oligarchy” with a series of events that attracted thousands of participants in Nebraska and Iowa. During these meetings, the politician made a clear appeal, urging citizens to join a popular movement to counter the oligarchy, which he claims is undermining democracy and facilitating the accumulation of wealth in the hands of a few.
Sanders criticized entrepreneur Elon Musk, now heading the Government Efficiency Department DOGE, accusing him of exerting excessive influence over American policies. He also pointed to the fiscal policies of the Trump administration, which he believes favor the wealthiest.
At one of the events, the progressive senator stated that he didn’t aim to change local legislation but wanted to motivate citizens to push their representatives to adopt more favorable positions for families. His goal remains to combat the power of billionaires and their allies, who he argues are threatening economic and social justice.
“Make sure your representative stands with workers,” he declared. “Do not let them submit to Republican leadership.” Sanders emphasized how the oligarchy is not just about growing economic inequality, but about controlling political power. Despite the public’s enthusiasm, the political reactions were not unanimous. Don Bacon, a Republican member of Congress, called Sanders’ views too radical: “He speaks to the far-left.”
In his speeches, the senator highlighted the threat posed by legislation proposed by President Trump, which includes significant cuts to Medicaid, the healthcare program for low-income individuals. “If the GOP follows through,” he warned, “there will be massive cuts to the program,” adding that such a reform could have severe consequences for millions of people.
The former presidential candidate urged citizens to pressure their representatives to oppose the bill and explicitly asked Bacon to join the few Republicans willing to vote against it.
Sanders further explained that the key lies in fighting for an agenda capable of challenging powerful lobby interests and delivering tangible results for working families. If reformists can implement concrete policies that address the daily needs of people, the working class will be back on their side.
The senator confirmed that he will continue traveling across the country, working to address the crises that threaten the future of upcoming generations.
