An American Airlines flight from New York to Delhi was diverted to Rome, Italy, due to a security concern, according to a spokesperson from the airline. Italian authorities stated that Flight 292 from JFK International airport was rerouted while flying over the Caspian Sea and made to land in Fiumicino (FCO) airport, flanked by Italian military fighter jets as it made its approach.
Passengers and crew deplaned, and after an inspection from law enforcement, the flight was once again cleared for departure.
A spokesperson for the airport explained that FCO was chosen for the landing because it can cope with such incidents, although neither Italian officials nor the airline explained what exactly the security concern was that forced the diversion. Firetrucks were spotted on the runway around the plane after it touched down. The American Airlines spokesperson said that the concern was determined to be “non-credible.”
The flight will stay in Rome overnight, giving the crew adequate time to rest before departing again on Monday.
