Hundreds of thousands of people around the world are following on two webcams the hatching progress of three eggs of Jackie and Shadow, two white-tailed bald eagles in the San Bernardino National Forest in Southern California. The so-called Eagle TV is pointed directly at the nest of two eagles documenting the hatching progress 24/7. Hatching is expected to be these days. Jackie and Shadow have been a couple since 2018 and successfully raised eaglets in 2019 and 2022, but the eggs did not hatch in 2023 and 2024.
Now fans following the event are hoping to see the baby eaglets emerge from the shell, especially after watching the parents’ efforts to defend them from the freezing cold by covering the snowy nest with their bodies.
Sandy Steers, an enthusiast who follows these birds and documents their lives by photographing them, pointed out that this year’s hatching has even more intense value for California residents who have experienced the devastating wildfires. “Many people say this meaningful event gives them hope that things can recover, thanks to the great power of nature,” Steers said.
