Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo called on Google to rethink its decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico “Gulf of America” for U.S. users. Sheinbaum harshly criticized the move in line with the Trump government’s position and warned that Mexico could file a civil lawsuit against the company if the change is not reversed, while also criticizing Google’s decision as an example of the manipulation of information.
Sheinbaum had sent a letter on Jan. 30 to the CEO of the company that is part of the U.S.-based Alphabet Group, Sundar Pichai, asking to correct the name of the area that is now incorrectly called the Gulf of America following a decree by President Donald Trump, as the name change should only apply to the U.S. territory, adding further, that this misnomer also affects the Mexican continental shelf. However, Mexico’s president said she was not satisfied with the response. “We currently have a dispute with Google and “if necessary, we will take civil action,” she reiterated during a morning conference broadcast live by local media.
On this occasion, Sheinbaum pointed out that the name “Gulf of Mexico” is internationally recognized and that the United States has sovereignty only up to 22 nautical miles from its coast. She also gratefully recalled that the Encyclopedia Britannica will continue to use the original name, thus defending the historic designation of the Gulf of Mexico.
