Donald Trump is headed to New Orleans on an Air Force One flight, where he will meet with families of the New Year’s Eve massacre victims and attend the 59th Super Bowl later this evening.
The president has stated that Monday morning he will announce which countries will be affected by the 25 percent steel and aluminum tariffs. The new trade measures will go into effect immediately, he said.
Following that, on Tuesday and Wednesday Trump will reveal which states will be affected by reciprocal rates, matching those of trading partners “so that we are treated fairly with other countries.”
For now, only tariffs on Chinese products remain in place. Canada and Mexico, the other two who were first targeted, have cooperated by deploying tens of thousands of military personnel at the borders to prevent the passage of illegal immigrants. However, Trump reiterated that this is only a trade pause and that rates may still be imposed on these two countries.
After Trump’s threats, Colombia’s President, Gustavo Petro, accepted repatriation of his country’s deported compatriots, Panama’s president withdrew from China’s New Silk Road project, and Denmark’s leader reiterated that Greenland will remain Denmark’s but allowed the Americans to build new military bases.
