Many same-sex American couples who had already planned their weddings have decided to move them up. The reelection of Donald Trump has caused alarm, and members of the LGBTQ+ community are taking steps to protect their rights.
For weeks now, there has been a rush to formalize unions and proceed with fertility treatments. While marriage equality was legalized by the Supreme Court in 2015 with the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges decision, the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022 that removed federal protections for abortion rights has shown how hard-won rights can suddenly be called into question.
These concerns are not without basis. In 2020, Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito openly criticized Obergefell, suggesting it could be revisited. However, for now, this threat has been mitigated by Congress, which has sought to safeguard the rights of same-sex couples through the Respect for Marriage Act, codifying protections for same-sex and interracial marriages.
The debate, however, has been reignited, especially in light of past Trump administration policies. These included banning transgender individuals from serving in the military and revoking certain anti-discrimination protections. During his latest campaign, Trump promised to reintroduce some of these measures and eliminate gender-affirming medical care, labeling it “child abuse.”
Amid this uncertainty, many have stepped forward to show solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. Lindsey Michelle, a wedding photographer, compiled a list of service providers offering free or discounted services to same-sex couples seeking to marry quickly.
Sarah Narcus, owner of a wedding venue in Massachusetts, also lent her support to the cause, emphasizing the importance of a network of allies for marginalized communities.
Despite reassurances from legal experts like attorney Mary Bonauto, who defended the landmark Obergefell ruling, political instability has been enough to push couples into urgent action.
For many, the return of “The Donald” is not just an electoral challenge but a threat against their lives and dreams.
