Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein is suffering from a form of bone marrow cancer, chronic myeloid leukemia, a form of bone marrow cancer, and is being treated in the New York prison where he is serving a sentence for rape.
It is just the latest health problem for Weinstein. The former producer, 72, looked frail in a brief court appearance in September, and underwent emergency heart surgery last month. His spokesman asked that his privacy be respected.
Harvey Weinstein was sentenced in California to 16 years in prison for rape. His 23-year sentence in New York State for the rape of another actress was overturned last April on a technicality; the retrial is expected to take place in November.
More than 80 women accused Weinstein of sexual harassment or rape in the course of his long career. Since 2017, when the #metoo movement erupted around his name, a worldwide effort was born against the normalization of sexual violence and the demand for sexual favors in exchange for work or career advancement, whether in Hollywood or in the office.
Among the women who have accused the producer of rape or harassment are famous actresses such as Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Ashley Judd.
Miramax, founded by Weinstein and his brother Bob in 1979, was a powerhouse producing a wealth of blockbusters and Academy Awards winners such as The English Patient, Shakespeare in Love, Good Will Hunting.
