In a bizarre but deadly incident, California authorities reported the passenger in a car was killed when a horse smashed through the windshield during a series of crashes on a Southern California interstate over the weekend, killing the horse as well.
The series of collisions began when a Toyota Tacoma towing a horse trailer veered to the right and struck a guardrail on northbound Interstate 15 near Norco around 2 a.m. on Sunday, the California Highway Patrol said. After the initial crash, the trailer fell over and split open, sending the horse onto the freeway, after which a semi-tractor trailer smashed into the horse trailer, according to officials.
Highway patrol Officer Javier Navarro told the Southern California News Group that the horse made it to the median but then tried to cross the interstate, when it was clipped by a black Honda Accord. Then, a gray Honda Accord struck the horse, which smashed through the car’s windshield. The passenger, a 25-year-old man in the front seat, was killed, Navarro said.
He reported that the horse was also killed.
According to the news group, the Honda’s driver, a 27-year-old man, suffered minor injuries.
As of yet, no one has been arrested, Navarro said on Monday, and what caused the Toyota towing the horse trailer to smash into the guardrail is still being investigated.
