What one source is calling “Anti-sex” mattresses have reportedly arrived in Paris ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games. With their materials and small size, some say that they have been designed to keep participants focused on their competition rather than on “extra-curricular” activities while in Paris.
The twin-size bed is designed by Airweave, which also created items for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. However, according to Inside the Game, the organizers’ aim may not be to curb the athletes’ impulses as much as to respect the environment, as both the cardboard frames and the mattresses are fully recyclable.
“I hope that Paris 2024’s efforts to reduce its impact will show that it is possible to do things differently,” Georgina Grenon, director of environmental excellence for the organizing committee, commented.
The cardboard beds are “more resistant than wood or steel” and can support up to 200 kg of weight, according to Airweave, so it’s hard to believe that their primary purpose is to prevent sex, even though they can shatter if someone jumps on them. Besides which, if there is no space on the bed, there certainly is on the floor. Furthermore, around 300,000 condoms will be distributed to 14,250 athletes from 200 delegations participating in the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris in a continuation of a policy that was first introduced in 1988 in Seoul and peaked in 2016 in Rio. The ‘love kit’ will feature various items like gels and lubricants in addition to condoms.
