Former tennis star Camila Giorgi, a four-time WTA singles title winner and a 2018 Wimbledon quarterfinalist, has officially announced her retirement from professional tennis amid swirling tax evasion allegations in her native Italy.
Giorgi’s decision comes as Italian authorities have launched a thorough investigation into her financial activities. “I am happy to formally announce retirement from my tennis career,” Giorgi shared on her Instagram. “I cherish all the beautiful memories,” she added.

Italian news outlets reported that the Guardia di Finanza, Italy’s financial crime agency, is probing Giorgi and her family for inconsistencies in their tax returns. A significant figure, over $500,000, is reportedly owed to the tennis star by the Italian Tennis Federation, which has led to further complications. Despite the controversies, Giorgi’s lawyers have stated that she intends to return to Italy to address the allegations. “In any case, Camila will soon return to Italy and will be able to give all the necessary explanations, also through her lawyers,” the legal team assured.
Moreover, the 32-year-old athlete has made headlines recently not just for her retirement but also for potential legal issues regarding alleged fake COVID vaccinations. Reports from last year suggested Giorgi circumvented vaccination requirements to participate in international tournaments, an allegation she has thus far vehemently denied.
Giorgi’s career, highlighted by reaching the world No. 26 rank twice, has seen its share of ups and downs. Her last professional appearance was at this year’s Miami Open, where she faced a crushing defeat against the current world No. 1, Iga Swiatek.
As Giorgi transitions out of her sports career, she has hinted at a possible shift towards modeling, leveraging her substantial social media following.
