In an effort to attract new recruits, the Miami Beach Police Department is banking on luxury. The administration announced that it has borrowed a $250,000, 2012 Rolls Royce Ghost as a patrol car. The MBPD announced on X last Thursday,“We are thrilled to introduce this stunning addition to the MBPD recruitment team–courtesy of Braman Motors”. The iconic Spirit of Ecstasy on the front, a twin-turbo V12, the massive front grille and the finest leathers, interior wood veneers inside, this represents the opulence of luxury cars.
While they themselves were thrilled, people who responded did not seem share the same thrill.

“This is where all the money goes, huh?” one commented.
“I don’t think this is a good look for the police department,” another wrote.
Taxpayers will not cover any costs related to the vehicle. According to the MBPD’s post and the department’s public information officer, Christopher Bess, who spoke with the Miami Herald, since the super luxury car is part of Braman Motors and is on loan, the dealership is sponsoring “all costs associated with this project,” including maintenance fees. The only case where MBPD would have to pay anything would be if the car was damaged while in the custody of the department, but an insurance certification has already been drafted for this through the city administration. When its job has been done, meaning the MBPD will recruit new officers, the car will be returned.
“The traditional methods of recruitment are no longer sufficient in addressing the diverse needs and aspirations of the next generation of law enforcement professionals. By embracing innovation and creativity, we can attract individuals who embody the values of integrity, service, and excellence that are central to our profession,” Mr. Bess said to Miami Herald.
It is still unclear how this ultra-luxury car will help attract new candidates.
In the last few years, the MBPD has suffered a decline in recruitment and respect for officers has suffered due to a series of unpleasant incidents. As for example, when in 2021, five officers were criminally charged for the beating of a black tourist. Or in the latest news case when an Italian man, Matteo Falcinelli, was bound hogtied and beaten after resisting officers.
