A woman living in a makeshift home inside the sign of a Family Fare supermarket was discovered after a year of residing up on the roof of the store.
Nicknamed the “rooftop ninja,” she was discovered by contractors of the property who were working on the top of the store located in Midland, Michigan, on Saginaw Road, near US-10, in late April. She was ensconced in a space between the interior wall and the letters of the store’s sign.
“The contractors had seen an extension cord leading from one of the rooftop units to this particular sign where she had been living,” Brennan Warren, a spokesperson for the Midland Police Department, told USA Today.
According to Warren, the woman, 34, voluntarily vacated and was not charged by officers.
Reportedly, when the police first entered the five-foot by eight-foot structure, they were surprised to find the woman had laid down her own flooring, set up a computer, and even had a Keurig coffee machine.
“We provided her with some information about services in the area,” Warren said. “She apologized and continued on her way. Where she went from there, I don’t know.”
The store is in contact with the woman so she can remove some of the belongings she left behind.
“We are proud of our associates for responding to this situation with the utmost compassion and professionalism,” the Family Fare Supermarkets chain said in an emailed statement. “Ensuring there is ample safe, affordable housing continues to be a widespread issue nationwide that our community needs to partner in solving.”
According to Midland authorities, the woman had been living in the sign above the supermarket for a over a year.
