An agent in Vice President Kamala Harris’ security detail of Secret Service agents was removed from duty as a result of what was deemed to be “concerning conduct”. The agent’s name and specific detail responsibilities have not yet been released and almost no details have been made public about the incident.
The conflict occurred at about 9 a.m. ET Monday at Joint Base Andrews ahead of a planned visit by the VP to Wisconsin, as reported by the Secret Service Agency.
In a published statement, Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the agent began “displaying behavior their colleagues found distressing,” though the statement did not disclose what exactly this behavior included.
Agents accepted into the Vice Presidential Protective Division must serve in field offices for a minimum of three years and receive exceptional performance reports before going into the division. They must also then pass the intensive Protective Detail Training course at the Secret Service’s James J. Rowley training facility in the DC suburbs.
VPD agents are privy to extremely sensitive planning on responses to nuclear war and catastrophic terrorist attacks or environmental disasters.
Harris was at the Naval Observatory during the incident and there “was no impact on her departure” from the base, said Guglielmi.
“The agent was removed from their assignment while medical personnel were summoned,” he added.
Harris’ office has not yet commented on the incident.
“The U.S. Secret Service takes the safety and health of our employees very seriously,” Guglielmi said. “As this was a medical matter, we will not disclose any further details.”
