Tesla is recalling nearly 4,000 of its Cybertrucks after discovering that the accelerator pedals could become stuck, posing a significant risk of unintentional acceleration and potential crashes. The recall, which impacted all Cybertrucks manufactured from November 13, 2023, to April 4, 2024, was prompted by the use of an unapproved soap lubricant during assembly, which compromised the pedal’s functionality.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) detailed that the residual soap reduced the adhesion of the pedal pad, leading to situations where it could dislodge and trap the pedal against the vehicle’s interior trim. This defect was first noted by vehicle owners through social media and escalated to Tesla’s attention after a formal complaint was filed on March 31, 2023.

This incident adds to a series of setbacks for Tesla, which recently announced a 10% reduction in its workforce amid declining sales and stock prices, which have plummeted by roughly 40% this year. The company also faces increased competition and has reported a drop in market share from 62% at the beginning of 2023 to 51% in the first quarter.
Unlike many previous recalls, the defect cannot be rectified with a software update and requires physical repairs, which Tesla will conduct at no cost to Cybertruck owners. The Cybertruck, Tesla’s first pickup truck, launched in November after several delays and has been polarizing due to its unconventional design and high starting price. Owners affected by the recall are expected to receive notification letters by June 2024.
