A student at Parkland High School in North Carolina has reportedly been booked under assault charges after repeatedly hitting his teacher in the classroom, which was all caught in a video that has since gained traction online.
The recording showing the student slapping his female teacher during class multiple times went viral on social media, with many people calling it a “disturbing video.”
Following the incident, the Forsyth Sheriff’s Office announced that the student is facing three misdemeanor charges, including assault on a government official, one count of communicating threats, and two counts of misdemeanor assault.
“We all agree that this incident was deplorable and outrageous to the community, and community organizations. All of us should be outraged when those who educate us can be assaulted,” reported Sheriff Bobby F. Kimbrough Jr.
Since the incident, Tricia McManus, Superintendent of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools has released a statement. “This behavior will not be tolerated. At no time is it acceptable for students to put their hands on a teacher in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools,” she said. “My focus now is making sure that our teacher is taken care of and has the support needed to navigate through the lasting effects of this incident.”
The recording circulating online displays the student confronting the teacher with threats and a slap that left the teacher relatively unshaken. “Do you think that affected me anyway?” The teacher said back.”Want me to hit you again?” The student then asks, to which the teacher replies by saying, “I don’t want it.” The student then struck the teacher again on the right side of her face, knocking her glasses off.
In the background, other students can be heard laughing as the student continued to threaten the teacher. “The f**k’s wrong with you, what you gonna do, still sit in that chair ’cause you a bitch. Ain’t nobody even coming, you got slapped,” the student continued, “B**ch go back to teaching.”
According to the WSFCS Code of Conduct, assault on a school employee is a level five offense that can be taken to a level six, which indicates expulsion. Reportedly, McManus is recommending expulsion in this case.
The names of the students and the teacher involved have not been disclosed.
