A restaurant in Lakewood, New Jersey, was turned upside down when a naked man allegedly ambushed customers and employees, wrecking the establishment in the process.
Workers at Maggie’s Bar and Grill called 911 at around 10 a.m. on Sunday and told dispatchers that the assailant was actively working his way through the place and destroying the furniture, equipment, and inventory on all three floors.
The 29-year-old unidentified Lakewood resident was arrested later that day after reportedly causing $100,000 in damages to the local restaurant.
Employees say he seemed determined to wreck Maggie’s, and the manager asserts that he had never seen the suspect before the incident.
“The guy came in after the cleaners, fumbling around and just started breaking stuff from the third floor, the second floor and all the way down to the basement,” Nysherra Butler, a Maggie’s employee said. “Running around naked, breaking bottles, smashing glass, doing everything he could to destroy us.”
Following the public disturbance, Maggie’s Bar and Grill said in a Facebook post that the attack was intentional.
“Maggie’s was vandalized, many irreplaceable items were deliberately broken and there was damage to our furniture, fixtures, and equipment. This was intentionally done, the suspect swiftly made his way through all areas of the building and was calculated in his destruction,” one of the posts read. “We take pride in welcoming a diverse crowd into our fun, friendly, and family orientated bar/restaurant. This type of behavior with the intent to destroy one of the last remaining local bars in the Jackson/Lakewood area will not be tolerated.”
According to police, the man seemed to be having a form of a mental crisis when they arrived at the scene, as he was unclothed and showing severe signs of emotional distress.
Lakewood Police Sergeant John Macerino was able to calm the man down and he was then taken into custody.
Maggie’s Bar and Grill was initially closed after the incident, but another Facebook post from the restaurant revealed that it reopened on Tuesday.
The man was hit with various charges, including burglary and criminal mischief, before being transported to a local hospital for a psychological evaluation and treatment.
