Wilkens Adonis and Darylee Leibrock, both 38, from Holbrook, have been indicted on manslaughter charges following the fatal overdose of their 14-month-old son, Joseph Adonis. The Suffolk County District Attorney, Ray Tierney, disclosed that the toddler died from ingesting a lethal mix of heroin, cocaine, and fentanyl. The discovery was made after police responded to a 911 call reporting an unresponsive child in the couple’s bedroom. Further investigation revealed unsecured narcotics and firearms in the home, alongside evidence of the child’s DNA on drug packages.
This case epitomizes the serious neglect often resulting from the narcotic crisis. It prompted County Executive Ed Romaine to denounce the fentanyl epidemic’s role in destroying families. “It is unthinkable that a toddler could be exposed to such dangerous, illegal drugs in the home, but it is now a reality,” Romaine stated.
The couple’s legal troubles were compounded by prior arrests for drug possession and failure to appear in court, a history that reflects their pattern of criminal behavior. Now facing a laundry list of charges including drug possession, weapon possession, and endangering the welfare of a child, they are held on bail.
This case serves as a potent, yet grim reminder of the urgent need for policy reform or other measures that may mitigate the devastating impact of drug abuse on the most vulnerable in society.
