In the newest twist to the Gilgo Beach murder investigation, attorney John Ray, representing the families of victims Shannan Gilbert and Jessica Taylor, has raised questions about the whereabouts of Asa Ellerup, the estranged wife of accused serial killer Rex Heuermann.
Despite Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney’s assertion that Ellerup was out of town during the murders of four sex workers found on Gilgo Beach between 2010 and 2011, Ray contests this timeline. He cites conversations with an Atlantic City hotel manager, suggesting Ellerup and her children’s later arrival could mean she was in town for at least one of the murders. This claim challenges the foundation of the prosecution’s case, as Ellerup has not been charged or suspected of any wrongdoing.
Bob Macedonio, Ellerup’s attorney, rebuffs the allegation, emphasizing the potential for reasonable doubt in Heuermann’s case if the timeline is incorrect. Heuermann, a 60-year-old New York City architect, has pleaded not guilty to the murders. His arrest in July, followed by his wife’s divorce filing, has reignited interest in the case, with police theorizing the murders occurred at Heuermann’s home while his family was away.
The case, which has captivated the public for over a decade, hinges on the precise movements of Ellerup, with the prosecution and defense both scrutinizing her whereabouts to bolster their arguments.
