Three US Army soldiers were killed and at least two dozen more were injured in a drone strike overnight on a tiny US outpost in Jordan, according to US authorities cited by CNN.
In a statement released on Sunday, US Central Command verified that a one-way drone strike that “impacted at a base in northeast Jordan” resulted in the deaths of three service personnel and the injuries of 25 others.
This is the first time US troops have been killed by enemy fire in the Middle East since the start of the Gaza conflict.
The drone seems to be the first documented strike on Tower 22 in Jordan, near the border with Syria, since attacks against US and partner forces started on October 17. It is unknown why air defenses were unable to stop the drone. The outpost’s US soldiers are there as part of Jordan’s advise-and-assist mission.
