A courageous Iowa principal, Dan Marburger, who valiantly protected students during a recent mass shooting at Perry High School, has tragically succumbed to his injuries, as confirmed by his wife.
The incident, which occurred on January 4 at the school near Des Moines, resulted in the initial loss of a sixth-grade student and injuries to several others, including Principal Marburger. The assailant, a 17-year-old student, unleashed gunfire, marking the second school shooting in the US within the early days of 2024.
Elizabeth Marburger, Dan’s wife, announced his passing on January 14, stating, “At approximately 8:00 am, January 14, Dan lost his battle.” She expressed gratitude for the 10 days he fought hard, creating memories that will be cherished forever. During his hospitalization, a GoFundMe campaign had been set up to support him.
Principal Marburger, who authorities reported was shot multiple times, emerged as a hero in the aftermath of the attack. His daughter, Claire Marburger, shared on social media that her father attempted to save students by engaging with and distracting the shooter as the tragic events unfolded.
Expressing her lack of surprise at her father’s brave actions, Claire stated, “It is absolutely zero surprise to hear he tried to approach and talk Dylan down and distract him long enough for some students to get out of the cafeteria.”
The Iowa Department of Public Safety acknowledged Marburger’s act, noting that he “acted selflessly and placed himself in harm’s way in an apparent effort to protect his students.” Marburger had dedicated at least 25 years to working in schools in Perry, according to the Perry Community School District. His legacy as a hero and dedicated educator will be remembered by the community he served for decades.
