New York Attorney General Letitia James requested on Friday that the judge presiding over Donald J. Trump’s civil fraud trial fine the former president around $370 million, citing evidence from the trial showing he had obtained that sum via illegal means.
The amount was far more than the $250 million James had calculated when she filed a lawsuit against Mr. Trump in the autumn of 2022, claiming he had inflated his net worth to get preferential treatment from banks and insurers.
Even though the trial – which had started in October – concluded last month, Mr. Trump’s sentence has not yet been determined. The attorney general requested a punishment in a post-trial brief that was submitted on Friday.
Arthur F. Engoron, the trial judge, has stated that he will attempt to provide a decision on the matter by the end of January. Ms. James is requesting that Mr. Trump be prohibited from operating any business in the state of New York and from engaging in the real estate market in addition to the severe financial fine.
