The Democrat’s House Majority super PAC has launched a $5.9 million campaign to capture New York’s 3rd Congressional District, a seat vacated by the recent expulsion of Republican George Santos. The special election, set for February 13, sees Democrat Tom Suozzi, a former representative of the district, pitted against Republican Mazi Melesa Pilip, a Nassau County legislator.
The PAC’s substantial investment includes $3.7 million on TV ads, $1.5 million on digital platforms, and $700,000 on mail ads. This aggressive push underscores the importance of the district, which encompasses parts of Long Island and Queens. The district’s shift from voting for President Biden in 2020 to electing Santos in 2022, and his subsequent expulsion, has intensified the contest’s significance.
House Majority PAC President Mike Smith stated, “With these initial television and digital reservations and mail program, House Majority PAC is making it clear that we will do whatever it takes to take back the House in 2024 — and NY-03 represents the opportunity to make that happen.”
This race is viewed as a bellwether for the 2024 House elections. Democrats aim to reclaim the majority, currently held by Republicans with 221 seats to the Democrats’ 213. The outcome of the special election in New York’s redrawn district could be pivotal in shaping the congressional landscape ahead of the November 2024 elections.
