Six people died in Texas after an adolescent driver of a pickup truck crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a minivan carrying seven passengers, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety on Wednesday.
The accident happened at 4 p.m. Tuesday on US Route 67. Following the collision in Johnson County, south of Fort Worth, three people—including the pickup truck’s 17-year-old driver—were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Two of the victims were children, aged 10 and 9.
According to the department, a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado carrying a passenger and a driver aged 17 entered the northbound lane in a “no passing” zone while driving south. A 2021 Honda Odyssey was then hit by the car while it was heading north, according to the report.
Five passengers and the Odyssey’s driver died, whereas the 43-year-old man – who was the only passenger to survive – had serious injuries. According to the report, the pickup truck’s driver and passenger also sustained serious injuries.
Nageswararao Ponnada, 64, Sitamahalakshmi Ponnada, 60, driver Rushil Barri, 28, of Irvine, Texas, Naveena Potabathula, 36, and the children, Krithik Potabathula, 10, and Nishidha Potabathula, 9, were named among the deceased. NBC Dallas-Fort Worth said that they are members of the same family.
