A group of U.S. senators introduced the Fans First Act, a bipartisan legislative initiative aimed at rectifying issues within the ticketing industry and enhancing transparency for attendees of live events. The proposed legislation addresses three primary concerns: price transparency, safeguarding consumers, and countering unscrupulous practices by individuals attempting to resell tickets at excessively high prices.
The origin of this legislative push was fueled by consumer grievances, particularly against industry giant Ticketmaster, which reached a crescendo in late 2022 during the high-demand for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. This led to a lawsuit by Swift fans alleging anticompetitive conduct and collusion with scalpers. The Senate Judiciary Committee also conducted a hearing to scrutinize Ticketmaster’s substantial influence in the ticketing sector.
