The US Food and Drug Administration alerted last Thursday that Sofia Produce LLC, doing business as Trufresh, is recalling all sizes of fresh cantaloupes owing to a probable salmonella infection.
The Arizona-based firm said that the cantaloupes were shipped straight to Canada, Texas, Florida, California, Maryland, New Jersey, Tennessee, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
According to the FDA, the cantaloupes were marketed from October 16 to October 23 in cardboard packages bearing the “Malichita” name. Every cantaloupe has a unique PLU sticker applied to it. On the black bottom of the sticker, the number 4050 is prominently shown in white letters along with the phrases “Product of Mexico/produit du Mexique.” The upper part of the label is white with the word “Malichita” written in script in black letters.
According to the FDA, there have been no illnesses linked to cantaloupes as of yet.
Customers who bought the recalled goods are urged to discard or return the cantaloupes to the store where they were originally purchased rather than eating or serving them.
Salmonella is a bacteria that may infect small children, the elderly, the frail, and those with compromised immune systems, often leading to serious and even deadly illnesses. Fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach discomfort are among the symptoms.
