“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” concert film has already sold more than $100 million in advance tickets internationally as of Thursday – setting a new domestic record for AMC’s biggest single-day ticket sales as the movie debuts in about 8,500 theaters worldwide next week.
AMC reported that audience demand “has been incredible” throughout the country, “from the largest cities to the smallest towns,” with giant screen formats taking the lead.
If those numbers hold true, the Eras movie would easily surpass the previous record-holder for music movies, 2011’s Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, whose gross tops out at $73 million.
The global premiere screening will take place in Los Angeles on Oct. 11. Despite the ongoing Hollywood actors strike, Swift is able to advertise the Eras movie thanks to a temporary agreement reached by SAG-AFTRA that applies to independent non-AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) movies that satisfy the same requirements the unions are requesting in their discussions with the studios.
The movie is the most recent wave in the economic tsunami that enveloped the Eras Tour, with record-breaking ticket demand, attendance, and concert tour earnings which QuestionPro research firm estimates may have led to up to $4.6 billion in consumer expenditure.
The all-time gross for an October opening weekend in North America is $96 million, made by “Joker” in 2019.
