With new passport applications surging, the United States Department of State is taking to the ground to help potential travelers successfully apply.
“Special Passport Acceptance Fairs” will be held at rec centers, public libraries, and local city administrative offices. Most of the events are in the opposite coast states of California and New Jersey, but several others are taking place in Florida, Alabama, Michigan, Missouri, Texas, and Wisconsin. The goal here is to help process as many new applications as possible in one go.
The full schedule is available on the U.S. Department of State’s website.
Earlier this year, the State Department said they have been receiving as many as 500,000 applications per week, which was the highest number on record during the timeframe. As a result, the current processing time for passports is a 10 to 13 week slog for routine service, and somewhat quicker 7 to 9 weeks with expedited service.
