Attorney General Merrick Garland stated Friday that U.S. Attorney David Weiss will be named Special Counsel in the continuing investigation of the president’s son, Hunter Biden.
The “ongoing investigation” of President Joe Biden’s son would be overseen by Weiss, “as well as for any other matters that arose or may arise from that investigation,” the Justice Department said in a statement. Weiss, headquartered in Delaware and currently in charge of the Hunter Biden investigation, requested to be named Special Counsel on Tuesday, and Garland concurred that it was “in the public interest” to do so, according to the attorney general.
The DOJ highlighted that Weiss was nominated in 2017 by then-President Donald Trump and confirmed in 2018 by the Senate under Republican rule.
Hunter Biden consented to plead guilty to misdemeanor charges stemming from his failure to pay income taxes earlier this year. However, the arrangement collapsed on July 26 as the parties were waiting to submit a plea in court due to misunderstandings on a different firearms charge.
